The 8track tape (formally Stereo 8; commonly called eighttrack cartridge, eighttrack tape, and eighttrack [citation needed]) is a magnetictape sound recording technology that was popular in the United States from the mid1960s to the early 1980s, when the Compact Cassette tape, which predated 8track, surpassed it in popularity for prerecorded music.
